The Community Project

Iron Mountain, Michigan 2017

The second Power of Words Project mural in Iron Mountain, MI was a huge success!  Just shy of 2000 people voted to ultimately elect the word “Community,” which Mia Tavonatti used as the theme of this 26’h x 60’w mural on the west facing wall of The Daily News Building in the historic downtown.  The community was again invited into the creative process by helping to create a list of roles people fulfilled in this special community, both past and present, and when that list of 100 was done, hundreds of locals submitted images of friends and familiy members who filled those roles in hopes they would be one of the 89 people ultimately being represented in this visual mosaic of the community.  In the center is the portarit of a child astronaut, a symbol for the potential of their future. Along with Mia and artist Sky Black from Flagstaff, AZ, scholarships were awarded to nine highschool and college art majors, two grants were given to local artists and 5 volunteer artists all worked to make this monumental work of public art a success!
